Bio
Jan Freidlin was born in Chita (Southern Siberia) in 1944.
He studied composition, piano and music theory at the Odessa Music College.
From 1965 to 1971 he studied composition and theory with Prof. A. Kogan at the
Odessa State Conservatory. Upon his graduation he served as Artistic
Director and Principal Conductor of the Odessa Philharmonic Society Jazz
Orchestra, and in 1974 became a member of the USSR Composers' Union. He
was the Head of the Music Theory department at the Stolyarsky Special Music
College from 1974 until 1990 when he immigrated to Israel. Freidlin taught
at the Rubin Academy of Music for three years, and he currently teaches at the
Levinsky College of Music in Tel-Aviv. He has composed music for many
television programs, for 26 theatre plays and for 7 feature films. A
prolific composer, many of his works have been performed in Russia, Israel,
Germany, Australia, Italy, Sweden, UK, Czech Republic, Holland, France,
Brazil, Japan, and the USA. The works of
J. Freidlin are published in many Editions
in USA ( 3 ) , Germany , France ( 2 ) , Israel , Belgium , Russia &
Ukraine.
Among his important achievements are:
- Grand Prix of Warna Cinema Festival (Bulgaria) for the
original music for the movie The Summer has Begun (1978).
- The ACUM Prize (Israel, 1993) for Miscenscenes -
Sonata for Violin and Cello.
- The ISCM - Liberson Prize (Israel, 1995) for Piano Trio
No. 2.
- 2nd Prize of G.F.A. (Claremont, CA - 1995) for Letters
from Arles for Guitar.
- Sonata in 3 Visions for Solo Harp was chosen by 13
International Harp Contest 1998 as required Israeli work.
- In 2002 his work "TWILIGHT MUSIC" for
Fl, V-n & P-no becomes the First Prize Winner of
Tampa Bay International Composers' Forum for
Excellence in Chamber Music (Florida , USA).
- Many performances on Russian TV of Ancient Greece Album
and Guernica - Ballet Music (1984).
- Performances in Moscow, Odessa and other towns of former
USSR by Odessa Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mariss Jansons - of Spring
Games (1983, 1984).
- Performances in Jerusalem, Tel-Aviv and Haifa by Israel
Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Gennadi Rozhdestvensky with cellist
Michael Haran playing the Cello Concerto (1995).
- Performances in Germany, Australia, Brazil, Italy, France,
UK and USA of chamber music works.
- 2 'Melodia' LP albums containing the Capriccio
Concertante for Piano and Orchestra and Chamber Works Disc.
- In May 1998 in Paris, Israel was represented by Trio #2
by Jan Freidlin at the International Radio Broadcasting Rostrum and received
high estimation. It was broadcast in many European countries.
- "5 Duets" for Violin and V-cello have been very successfully
performed and warmly accepted at Annual Festival Mozart in Bruxelles (Belgium) on
September 2003 (performed by G. Sharon and
M. Haran).
- Piano "Ballade in
Black & White" was dedicated and then "premiered"
by I. Faliks in Chicago , Boston and finally at the
famous Carnegie Hall in New York on March 2006.
- 11-12 of August, 2006 -
Symphony 2 has been very successfully
performed and warmly accepted in Santiago by Chili State Symphony under cond. M.
Haran.
- 21 - 24 October of 2007 - series of "premiere"
performances of "POEM OF THE CONTRASTS" , commissioned by IPO and played by
Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Zubin Mehta.
